From Tacloban to the rest of the country, and still writing

For a few years, his songs carried Gawad Kalinga’s Bayani Challenge. Then came Manila, marriage, fatherhood, loss and bills. Jed Dycoco is still sharing his songs, one demo at a time.

Jed Dycoco started in Tacloban, writing and singing for Scarlet Alley, a band from Region 8.

For a few years his songs traveled much farther than home. They were the theme songs of Gawad Kalinga’s Bayani Challenge and were heard in different parts of the country.

Then life moved him to Manila. He got married, and for a while the songs waited while he focused on raising a family.

Meeting SiSoPhi, the Singer Songwriters Philippines community, brought the old fire back. Open mics followed, then a guest spot on DWAN radio, and the start of an album.

He moved to Manila, got married and put his energy into raising a family. The songs waited.

Meeting the Singer Songwriters Philippines community reignited his passion to keep sharing his songs.

He started joining open mics around Metro Manila, at Saguijo, Aromata and 88 Fryer, and guested on DWAN radio.
The album
A record that had to wait
Of Monsoon Sunsets at Dawn was meant to come out this year. Bills had to be paid first, so the release was put on hold.
Home
Loss, and a longing for Tacloban
He lost his father to cancer, and he still longs for a visit back home to Tacloban.
Today
Still here, still writing
He works from home, takes care of his daughter and supports his wife in her career. There is a lot on his mind, but he isn’t giving up on the songs.

Written by a person

Anyone can generate a song with an app now, which makes a real songwriter harder to find. Jed’s answer is to stay with what he started with.

“I stick to my foundation, which is songwriting. I sometimes use AI tools, but only to discover and experiment. Any song I release will be purely original and authentic, because that is what an artist is: someone who creates.”
